Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 14147 (August 5, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) James J. Hudnell, United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in the Republic of Cambodia. Second Lieutenant Hudnell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 7 May 1970, while serving as platoon leader in the Republic of Cambodia. When his unit came under heavy attack by a determined enemy force, Second Lieutenant Hudnell immediately deployed his men and unhesitatingly led his men against the nearest enemy position. Twice more that same night the enemy attacked but were repelled by the friendly unit. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
