The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Michael David Allum (NSN: 0-682781), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while attached to and serving with Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED NINETY-TWO (VA-192), aboard the U.S.S. BON HOMME RICHARD (CVA-31). On 21 November 1965, while a member of a flight of A-4C’s from BON HOMME RICHARD, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Allum attacked the Huu Lai Highway Bridge in North Vietnam. The bridge was a vital link in a major highway system, heavily defended by anti-aircraft artillery. In the face of intense enemy fire, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Allum selected the most advantageous attack heading and maneuvered his aircraft to place two direct hits on the bridge in two successive runs and completely destroyed the structure. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Allum’s successful attack seriously hampered the movement of enemy military supplies along this route. By his imaginative and professional airmanship, extraordinary skill and devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Allum upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
