Stanley, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism in rescuing two small girls from a fire in a Mountain View, California apartment building. While attempting to fight the fire, Chief Stanley heard coughing coming from an apartment that allegedly was vacant and, with complete disregard for his own safety, twice crawled into the smoke and flame-filled unit and rescued the two small children who had been overcome by smoke.
