Lewis Lucas graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1889. In 1901 he was assigned to the Marine Corps Rifle Team and competed for the Hilton Trophy at Sea Girt, New Jersey. As a Lieutenant Colonel he attended the Army War College in 1910 and thereafter served in various command until he retired following a year of sick leave in 1915. He was recalled to active duty during World War I and served for fourteen years on the Navy’s General Board. In 1932 he was returned to the retired list.
