The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Boatswain’s Mate First Class (Aviation Warfare) Timothy R. Goode, United States Navy, for heroism while serving as Fly Two Petty Officer in U.S.S. KITTY HAWK (CV-63) on 11 July 1994. During night carrier air operations while deployed to the Western Pacific, an F-14A aircraft landed short, impacting U.S.S. KITTY HAWK’s ramp. The aircraft burst into flames, scattering Fire and Flaming debris over the entire landing area, resulting in a major flight deck conflagration. Both aircrewmen successfully ejected from the stricken aircraft, but the pilot landed directly in the flaming wreckage and was dragged toward the edge of the flight deck by his parachute. Petty Officer Goode rushed to the scene and collapsed the inflated parachute, thus preventing further movement of the pilot toward the deck edge or deeper into the fire. He noticed that burns to the pilot’s hands prevented him from releasing his parachute. Petty Officer Goode disconnected the pilot’s risers, entangled shroud lines and remaining survival equipment, and then escorted the pilot to safety and prevented further injuries. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Petty Officer Goode saved the pilot from certain death; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
