United States Military Academy Register of Graduates

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Howard Taft Prince, II, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Prince distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a Staff Officer and subsequently as Commanding Officer of Troop B, 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in action against the enemy in February 1968. During a combat mission, the men of his Troop became embroiled in a battle with a large enemy unit. With no regard for his own personal safety, Captain Prince exposed himself to hostile fire to organize a withdrawal to a more secure area. His actions inspired the men under him, enabling them to accomplish a most difficult mission with minimum of casualties and at the same time punish the enemy to the maximum. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Prince, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
