The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Data Processing Technician Third Class Randy Wayne Berry, United States Navy, for heroism while attached to Data Processing Service Center, Pacific Fleet on 8 July 1978 while at Hanauma Bay, Hawaii. Upon hearing the cries of his shipmate who was being dashed against rocks by strong currents at the Witches Brew area of Hanauma Bay, Petty Officer Berry, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, unhesitatingly plunged into the dangerous currents and high waves which were breaking over rocks on the shoreline in an effort to save his now semi-conscious, injured shipmate. Petty Officer Berry struggled to maintain him afloat until further assistance arrived and completed rescue efforts. Petty Officer Berry’s courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk undoubtedly saved his shipmate from drowning; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
