(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Aviation Maintenance Administrationman Second Class John S. Mungo, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. While on liberty in Gibraltar, Petty Officer Mungo was swimming in Catalan Bay when a sudden change of wing, current and sea conditions threatened a woman struggling to stay afloat farther off shore. With complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the dangers involved, Petty Officer Mungo returned some 200 yards seaward to the drowning woman, calmed her and returned her to shore.
