Carl Gamborg-Andresen was known as Charles G. Andresen throughout his early life until, in 1903 when he was 37 years old, the Secretary of the Navy authorized him to change his name to Carl Gamborg-Andresen. He served as an enlisted Marine for more than seven years before his appointment as a Second Lieutenant. He retired as a Colonel of Marines in 1925, with more than 30 years of service.

    Marine Corps Orders No. 26 (June 27, 1921)

    The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in transmitting to First Lieutenant Carl Gamborg-Andresen, United States Marine Corps, the Brevet Medal which is awarded in accordance with Marine Corps Order No. 26 (1921), for distinguished conduct and public service in the presence of the enemy near Tientsin, China, on 13 July 1900. On 28 March 1901, First Lieutenant Andresen-Gamborg is appointed Captain, by brevet, to take rank from 13 July 1900.
