The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Two Bruce Davis Alexander (MCSN: 0-67863), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as a Helicopter Aircraft Commander serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron TWO HUNDRED SIXTY-THREE (HMM-263), on 1 July 1967. As pilot of a MEDEVAC helicopter, Chief Warrant Officer Alexander guided his aircraft into an unsecured zone to pick up a critically wounded Marine. Enemy fire was directed at the helicopter throughout the final phases of the approach but due to the close proximity of friendly troops he could not allow his gunners or his fixed wing and gunship escort to suppress the relentless sniper fire. While waiting in the zone to receive the MEDEVAC the aircraft received four hits, one of which wounded the Corpsman. After loading the MEDEVAC aboard, Chief Warrant Officer Alexander lifted out of the zone and skillfully maneuvered his aircraft out of the area without sustaining further damage to the aircraft or further injury to the crew from the incessant hostile fire. After a stop at an aid station at Tam Ky, where emergency first aid was administered to the MEDEVAC and Corpsman, he flew both men to the 1st Hospital near Ky Ha. Chief Warrant Officer Alexander’s courage and determination with complete disregard of personal risk in the face of enemy fire, enabled him to save the life of a fellow Marine. His decisions, airmanship and overall conduct upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
