The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Second Lieutenant Charles McAnally, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 12 May 1864, while serving with Company D, 69th Pennsylvania Infantry, in action at Spotsylvania, Virginia. In a hand-to-hand encounter with the enemy Second Lieutenant McAnally captured a flag, was wounded in the act, but continued on duty until he received a second wound.
