The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Operations Specialist Seaman David Leo Beauchemin, United States Navy, for heroism while serving as a member of the North Atlantic Treat Organization Iceland Defense Force as the U.S. Naval Facility, Keflavik, Iceland on 15 August 1976. Upon seeing that two young boys had fallen from a pier in Keflavik Harbor and were hopelessly floundering in an attempt to stay afloat, Seaman Beauchemin, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, unhesitatingly plunged into the frigid water to effect the rescue of the children. Although both children were struggling frantically, thus thwarting his efforts, he held both of the children afloat until assistance arrived. Seaman Beauchemin’s courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk undoubtedly saved the two boys’ lives; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
