The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lance Corporal William Charles Ashcraft, II, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving as a Sentry, Guard Company, Marine Barracks, Lualualei, Hawaii, on 20 January 1985. At approximately 1150, a report was received at Guard Company Lualualei that a hiker had fallen down a steep cliff off the Kolekole Pass. As part of the reactionary team, Lance Corporal Ashcraft, with complete disregard for his personal safety, scaled down the side of the cliff to where the victim was clinging to a piece of corrugated tin. He immediately rendered first aid to the victim and signaled the MEDEVAC helicopter to his position. Lance Corporal Ashcraft then assisted the medic in the prompt and safe evacuation of the hiker. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Lance Corporal Ashcraft undoubtedly saved a life, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
