The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Corporal Thomas Michael Barnes, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving as Field Radio Operator, Headquarters Battery, Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic on 19 November 1984. Corporal Barnes was serving as a driver for Major Funk at Observation Post Two when word came over the radio that a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter had crashed at Landing Zone Penguin, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He immediately drove Major Funk to the site of the burning helicopter. Corporal Barnes was assisting in checking the wreckage when a Marine was discovered trapped under the tail section. Using his gloves to prevent burns, he helped others rock the extremely hot frame so that the other two Marines could reach Corporal McNeil, the trapped Marine. Corporal Barnes then aided in administering first aid and comforting the injured personnel. By his quick thinking and courageous actions, Corporal Barnes undoubtedly prevented further injury and loss of personnel in this life threatening and tragic event; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
