The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant James Anthony Burzo (ASN: 32780531), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 320th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the Foret de Gremecey, France, on 29 September 1944. On that date, his company was ambushed from the front and on both flanks. Sergeant Burzo and another enlisted man, realizing the danger to the company, rushed forward to engage the enemy. He first assaulted the first enemy machine gun post and, after throwing a grenade into it, was mortally wounded by a burst of fire before he reached the enemy. Despite his wounds he continued forward and closed with the gun crew, killing four and routing the remainder before he collapsed from loss of blood. Sergeant Burzo’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
