The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Corporal Norman M. Abernathy (MCSN: 1602384), United States Marine Corps, for heroism in endeavoring to rescue a drowning squadron mate from rough seas off the coast of Vietnam on the morning of 21 November 1964. Corporal Abernathy was serving as Crew Chief of a Marine Helicopter when one of the aircraft in the same flight was observed to crash in the water. Corporal Abernathy promptly pushed 2,000 pounds of cargo overboard before the pilot reached the scene of the crash. On arrival at the scene Corporal Abernathy efficiently aided in hoisting one of the crew of the crashed helicopter aboard his aircraft. Another victim bobbed to the surface floating face down with evidence of severe head injuries. As soon as his aircraft was re-positioned Corporal Abernathy, without hesitation entered the water and swam to the unconscious victim. He promptly pulled the man’s head out of the water and kept it out while struggling in the swelling windy sea to get the victim into the rescue sling. The fatigued Corporal Abernathy was unable to get the victim into the sling until another Crew Chief also entered the water and both men working together were able to secure the unconscious victim’s life jacket to the hoist cable. After the victim was taken aboard the helicopter which departed immediately, Corporal Abernathy and his companion remained in the water until picked up by another helicopter. By his prompt and courageous actions in attempting to save a life at the risk of his own, Corporal Abernathy upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
