The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Warrant Officer 2 (CWO-2) Robert Freeman Hanseroth (NSN: 430309), United States Navy, for heroism in rescuing a soldier who had fallen overboard from the U.S.S. DELEGATE (AM-217), near Los Negros Island on 9 June 1944. In spite of a rain squall and heavy seas he courageously went to the rescue of the soldier who had become so entangled in his poncho that he was in great danger of drowning and was being kept afloat by an enlisted man. Although the seas were high and the surf dangerous, he and the enlisted man succeeded in swimming with the soldier to the shore. His heroic conduct in the face of great danger was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
