The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Gunner’s Mate Second Class John M. Mullahy, Jr., United States Navy, for heroism in connection with the events following the explosion of Turret TWO in U.S.S. IOWA (BB-61) on 19 April 1989. Despite heavy black smoke, Petty Officer Mullahy entered the darkened Magazine Sprinkler Station and actuated the turret magazine sprinklers which surely prevented additional detonation of ordnance. After egressing the Magazine Sprinkler Station, he single-handedly carried the ship’s Damage Control Assistant to the forward Battle Dressing Station after he had become disoriented and overcome by smoke. Finally, he assisted in post damage assessment and the dangerous task of removing burning ordnance and debris from dark, water filled spaces. Petty Officer Mullahy’s dedication and uncommon perseverance after thirty-six continuous hours of distinguished performance were inspirational. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Petty Officer Mullahy undoubtedly saved his shipmate and prevented further damage to the ship; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
