Vivian Crea was commissioned an Ensign in the Coast Guard Reserve upon graduation from Officer Candidate School at Yorktown, Virginia in December, 1973. She made history in 2006 when the Senate confirmed her to become the first woman in service to achieve the rank of Vice Admiral. She served from 2006 to 2009 as the 25th Vice Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, becoming the first woman to hold that office. She retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Vice Admiral in 2009.
