Headquarters, Army Air Forces, India-Burma Theater, General Orders No. 44 (February 27, 1945)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Hugh E. Stanley, Jr. (ASN: 15329438), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement by participating as Aerial Radio Operator, in more than nine hundred hours of operational flight in transport aircraft from 21 September 1943 to 8 February 1945 over the dangerous and difficult Assam-China air routes, where enemy interception and attack was probable and expected. Flying at night as well as by day, at high altitudes over impassable, mountainous terrain through areas characterized by extremely treacherous weather conditions necessitating long periods of operation on instruments, often encountering severe icing conditions and mechanical difficulties requiring courageous and superior performance of his duties to overcome, he accomplished his missions with distinction. His heroic achievement in the face of the hazards and difficulties faced regularly and continuously with steadfast devotion to duty, reflect much credit on himself and the Army Air Forces of the United States.
