(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Corporal Charles J. Hilsman (ASN: 33053186), United States Army Air Forces, was awarded the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 4 November 1942, while serving with the 703d Ordnance Company (Aviation) in New Guinea. Corporal Hilsman and several other crew members were unloading bombs when one bomb was fused. The others ran for cover, but Corporal Hilsman returned to pick up the bomb in an effort to save the plane from damage. It exploded and he was killed.
