The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade James A. Smith (ASN: 36146061), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Combat Command “B”, 6th Armored Division, in action in the vicinity of Bourg Blanc, France on 7 August 1944. Technician Fifth Grade Smith volunteered to join a small task force to destroy an enemy observation post that had been firing on our forces. His desire to participate in the dangerous mission cost him his life but reflects the finest traditions of the military service.
