The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Andrew R. Doerr (ASN: 33811555), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 44th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action in the vicinity of Kalborn, Luxembourg, on 9 February 1945. When his squad leader was killed during an artillery bombardment, Sergeant Doerr immediately assumed command and reorganized his squad. After evacuating the injured men, he set up his defenses for the night. During the night the enemy counterattacked and surrounded the company. On his own initiative, Sergeant Doerr moved his squad under heavy fire into strong positions from which the enemy was delayed, permitting the company to reorganize and establish its line of defense. His sound judgment, courage, and initiative are in keeping with the finest traditions of the United States Infantryman.
