The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Nicholas Bishop (ASN: 42108073), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 44th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action in the vicinity of Irrhaussen, Germany, on 21 February 1945. After leading his squad in a successful attack upon two pillboxes, he led a patrol to the outskirts of the village where twenty-four enemy personnel had barricaded themselves in a house. Led by a fanatical officer, the enemy elected to fight it out. By a careful deployment of his men, and by using only the weapons available to his rifle squad, Sergeant Bishop effectively routed the enemy group. His calm judgment and excellent leadership reflect credit to himself and the United States Army.
