The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Dwight A. Bennett (ASN: 34214329), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 44th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany during the period 28 July 1944 to 15 April 1945. As a rifleman, squad leader, and platoon sergeant, his contribution to the success of his unit has been outstanding. On one occasion, upon the death of his squad leader, he took over command of the group and led them through withering enemy fire to safety without suffering further casualties. His courageous leadership, sound judgment and efficiency reflect high credit upon himself and the United States Army.
