The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Gailey E. Nelson (ASN: 36397553), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 44th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action in France during the period 28 July 1944 to 14 November 1944. As squad leader he consistently demonstrated gallantry and aggressive leadership. On one occasion at Huelgoat, France, on 6 August 1944, when his platoon was pinned down by withering enemy fire, he concentrated mortar fire so accurate as to enable his platoon to overrun the enemy position. His leadership and judgment reflect high credit upon himself and the military service.
