The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Edward B. Burnell (ASN: 33119744), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 44th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action in France during the period 28 July 1944 to 15 November 1944. His service has been characterized by courage, dependability, and efficiency. On one occasion when enemy elements attempted to follow a barrage with a tank attack, his personal courage in voluntarily exposing himself to direct fire against the tanks led to their speedy dispersal. At Luneville, France, on 19 September 1944, and again at Armaucourt, France, 24 September 1944, his tactical judgment in covering avenues of approach resulted in the destruction of several vehicles and their personnel. His actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the United States Army.
