The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Russell M. Cory (ASN: 0-1313973), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 44th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany during the period 11 October 1944 to 15 January 1945. As leader of a machine gun platoon, his service has been characterized by excellent leadership and efficiency. At Lelling, France, on 22 November 1944, he placed his weapons in an exposed position in order to cover engineers attempting to build a bridge. When heavy artillery fire forced the work to cease, he courageously held his position until all evacuation was completed. He then withdrew his platoon without suffering casualties. His calm courage and sound tactical judgment reflect high credit to himself and the military service.
