The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Daniel L. Fletcher (ASN: 0-1309656), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 44th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action in Belgium during the period 14 January 1945 to 16 January 1945. His service has been marked by efficiency and courage. Near Bastogne, Belgium, on 14 January 1945, he entered a field under heavy enemy fire to rescue a wounded aid man. Later, on 16 January 1945, at Longvilly, Belgium, while leading his platoon in an attack, he was wounded. Unable to continue personally in the attack, he insisted on passing on vital instructions before his evacuation. His actions reflect high credit upon himself and the military service.
