The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Vyron E. Anderson (ASN: 0-461281), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 128th Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action in the vicinity of Brest, France, on 12 September 1944. Held captive on Crozon Peninsula, First Lieutenant Anderson planned a daring method of escape. After crawling two hundred yards through a guarded area to the beach, he confiscated a fifteen foot row boat and escaped through a hail of machine gun fire to friendly lines, furnishing them with information about the enemy garrison. His great fortitude, resourcefulness, initiative and unlimited courage in executing the hazardous escape reflects the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces.
