The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Armor) James A. Grubbs (ASN: 0-1300026), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 44th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action in the vicinity of Brest, France, on 8 August 1944. When ordered to evacuate an area that was undergoing heavy enemy shellfire, Lieutenant Grubbs moved to a road junction that was under direct fire and supervised an orderly flow of vehicles and men from the area. He remained at his post until a direct hit took his life. Without a doubt, his prompt and courageous action saved many lives and vehicles in the evacuation of the area. Lieutenant Grubbs’ gallantry and devotion to duty are in accord with the finest traditions of the United States Army.
