The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Frank C. Waggoner (ASN: 39020659), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 15 December 1943, near San Pietro, Italy. During a night attack, Corporal Waggoner’s unit became pinned down by interlocking machine gun fire which was covering all available approaches to enemy positions. Exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, Corporal Waggoner moved forward and succeeded in reaching a position from which he was able to kill the gunner and assistant gunner of a machine gun nest. With this weapon neutralized, the point of the advance was afforded sufficient freedom to move forward. After knocking out this machine gun, Corporal Waggoner then assisted his wounded platoon leader to a covered position. His courage under fire reflects the finest traditions of the military service.
