Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 72 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Sergeant [then Platoon Sergeant] Alvin E. Tway (ASN: 36152077), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 16 December 1943, near San Pietro Infine, Italy. First Sergeant Tway was ordered to withdraw his platoon from a position under intense enemy artillery and small arms fire. After directing the platoon to a supplementary position, First Sergeant Tway found that three of his men had been wounded and were unable to move without assistance. He helped these men, one at a time, to a place of safety where their wounds could be dressed. This rescue work necessitated his crossing the bare forward slope of a hill for a distance of 300 yards under heavy mortar, artillery and machine gun fire. First Sergeant Tway’s heroic and selfless actions saved the lives of three soldiers.
