The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Daniel Curtis Hamer, Jr. (AFSN: AO-1908904), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial combat on 25 September 1951 in Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Hamer was leading an element in a formation of twenty F-86’1 when an enemy group of between eighty and one hundred MiG-15’s was encountered. Although completely outnumbered the formation of F-86’s initiated an attack on the MiG-15’s to prevent an assault on United Nations fighter bombers. He succeeded in disrupting their attempt and then made repeated attacks on other flights of MiG-15’s until the fighter bombers had completed their mission. Lieutenant Hamer’s heroic leadership and outstanding personal courage in the face of overwhelming odds reflects the highest credit upon himself, his comrades in arms of the United Nations and the United States Air Force.
