(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Donald Eugene Zahn (ASN: 17109148), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 3d Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. Sergeant Zahn was the first to volunteer to cross the bridge at Brevands onto the enemy for. Alone, on a 30 minute reconnaissance, he was able to locate the German troops and gun emplacements. When other paratroopers arrived they all came under fire and promptly returned fire as they re-crossed the bridge under the lower bridge supports to avoid further fire. Sergeant Zahn’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 101st Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
