The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) James W. Workman (ASN: 0-271492), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 1st Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 24 December 1942, during the Papuan Campaign at Buna, New Guinea. During the attack on a heavily fortified enemy position, Captain Workman led his company against a machinegun emplacement which had not been definitely located and which was delaying the general advance. He made a successful crossing of a river, found a beachhead and then took a patrol forward to locate the enemy emplacement which was only a short distance away and which immediately opened fire. He returned to his patrol, directed and then personally led an attack on the enemy position. Captain Workman was killed by enemy fire during this action, but his courageous personal leadership inspired the men of his unit to continue the attack, and, later, to bring it to a successful conclusion. Captain Workman’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
