The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Charles S. Wolfe (ASN: 33087321), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action on 1 April 1943 while serving with an Infantry Company of the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action southeast of ***, Tunisia, North Africa. Private First Class Wolfe, with another soldier who was later killed by machine gun fire, charged the crest of a hill held by the enemy and opened fire with his automatic rifle, killing several of the enemy and disorganizing the remainder. His actions allowed his platoon, which had been pinned down by heavy enemy machine gun fire and hand grenades, to gain their objective, the crest of the hill. Private First Class Wolfe’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
