The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Carl Wilson (ASN: 35257505), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 3d Chemical Mortar Battalion, 84th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 22 April 1945. While under intense enemy fire, Corporal Wilson volunteered to recover a vitally needed machine gun to repel an enemy attack. He and another soldier dashed for the gun and although he was mortally wounded in the action, he recovered the weapon and staggered back, dropping it at the feet of his comrades. Corporal Wilson’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
