Headquarters, SEVENTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 15 (August 12, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Charles Sidney Willsher (ASN: 37098327), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, during the campaign at Maknessy, Tunisia. On the afternoon of 29 March 1943, Staff Sergeant Willsher, upon learning the enemy had launched an attack on the position held by Company L, requested that the Battalion Commander allow him to take a forward group of volunteers from Headquarters Company to assist in driving the enemy to the rear. Permission was granted, and Staff Sergeant Willsher led a group of fourteen men. They arrived at the scene of the heaviest fighting at about 1530 hours where they were led by Sergeant Willsher to the crest of a hill over which the enemy was attempting to storm. Using hand grenades, bayonets and rifles, the volunteer group succeeded in driving the enemy from this hill, inflicting severe casualties on them. Staff Sergeant Willsher was seen to follow the withdrawing Germans and either kill or severely wound three of them with his bayonet. Staff Sergeant Willsher received a piece of shrapnel in his left ear but refused to be evacuated. He remained on the scene of the battle, personally supervising and assisting in the evacuation of the wounded and dead. Having satisfied himself that all his men were accounted for and his assistance no longer needed, he returned to the Battalion Command Post to resume his duties.
