(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Johnnie Edward Williams (ASN: 34337801), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Aili Island, New Guinea, on 25 April 1944. Private Williams assumed command of a squad of men whose leader had been wounded. Although wounded himself, Private Williams organized the men under fire and saved the life of at least one other man. In a second Japanese attack which followed, he directed the fire of the squad so effectively that the enemy was annihilated. Private Williams’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
