The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Alfred Hicks Williams, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Williams commanded a tank company which landed on the coast of France under heavy enemy small arms, machinegun, and observed artillery fire. Due to the devastating enemy fire, casualties were sustained and his unit became partially immobilized. First Lieutenant Williams promptly reorganized and directed his company to the opening of a beach exit. With complete disregard for his own safety, he constantly exposed himself to the intense fire and directed his unit in the accomplishment of its mission. First Lieutenant Williams’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
