Technical Sergeant Whitlock was leading a platoon against Japanese who were strongly entrenched on Question Mark Hill, near Cauringan Village, northern Luzon. After a long forced march over mountainous territory and without food or water for 24 hours, the platoon encountered intense enemy rifle and machine gun fire. Technical Sergeant Whitlock, using hand grenades, knocked out one Japanese machine gun and led his men into hand-to-hand fighting before he was mortally wounded by enemy bayonet wounds. His outstanding heroism, at the cost of his own life, made possible the successful advance of his unit against the enemy. Technical Sergeant Whitlock’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 33d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
