Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 105 (December 7, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles C. Wetzel (ASN: 0-1320206), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces during the attack on Freville, France, on 12 June 1944. Observing that the left flank of his platoon was in the greatest danger from intense enemy fire, Lieutenant Wetzel went to that part of the line and hurled back several enemy hand grenades. Despite wounds in his leg, Lieutenant Wetzel then dragged himself back to a position in the center of the platoon to direct the fighting. Here he was again wounded, but still refusing to be evacuated, he remained with the platoon, moving forward and closing with the enemy in hand to hand combat until he was killed in action. Second Lieutenant Wetzel’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
