    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Thomas Steven West (ASN: 33668243), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 58th Armored Infantry Battalion (Separate), attached to the 8th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces near Oeynhausen, Germany, on 8 April 1945. Private West stopped an enemy advance single-handed. He knocked out a hostile tank, drew enemy fire, and enabled his unit to break through. While attempting the rescue of a wounded comrade, he was mortally wounded. Private First Class West’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
