(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Carlton G. Werner (ASN: 0-1310001), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 327th Glider Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 9 June 1944. First Lieutenant Werner was a member of a combat patrol that was ambushed by the enemy, and, after suffering severe casualties, the patrol attempted a withdrawal by swimming across the Douve River. Observing that the wounded men were unable to make this hazardous crossing, First Lieutenant improvised a raft and, in the face of intense artillery, mortar, machine gun, and small arms fire, he swam across the river, towing the raft loaded with wounded and evacuated them to safety. First Lieutenant Werner’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 101st Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
