Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 77 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Alfred B. Weiner (ASN: 32687993), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 6 August 1944. When his company was halted by intense and accurate machine gun fire, Private First Class Weiner voluntarily went forward across his company’s entire front. He was in plain view of the enemy as he sought to turn the fire from his machine gun on the hostile position. He succeeded in knocking the enemy gun out of action, killing four members of the German crew, and forcing two of them to surrender. Private First Class Weiner then observed an enemy counterattack in another platoon sector. Without any assistance, he carried his gun and ammunition back across the exposed enemy front, and destroyed a second enemy machine gun. His own weapon jammed, but Private First Class Weiner secured a carbine. Two Germans tried to force him to surrender, and he killed both of them before he was mortally wounded by enemy fire. Private First Class Weiner’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
