The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Doneivon Leo Weeks (ASN: 38270930), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 130th Infantry Regiment, 33d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Galiano, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 12 April 1945. Private First Class Weeks was lead scout for two platoons of Company B, 130th Infantry Regiment, which had been relieved from holding a bridge and were returning to a bivouac area. Close to dusk, as they rounded a bend in the road, the platoons were suddenly fired upon by intense machine gun and heavy 75-mm. mountain gun fire. As his comrades dispersed to cover, Private First Class Weeks lay in the road wounded in both legs. Painfully hurt, he warned his comrades to remain covered and, with a grenade in his hand, started to drag himself across the road toward the machine gun position. The enemy-held fire so the other men of Company B could not locate the emplacement. As Private First Class Weeks neared the gun and attempted to throw the grenade, the enemy opened fire and killed him. By his self sacrifice, Private First Class Weeks forced the enemy to disclose its ambush and saved the lives of many of his comrades. Private First Class Weeks’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 33d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
