    Headquarters, U.S. Forces-Pacific, General Orders No. 70 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant William E. Warren, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 123d Infantry Regiment, 33d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 17 April 1945. On that date, the advance of his company along a narrow trail on Mount Calugong was halted by a force of eighty Japanese firing rifles, machine guns, and knee mortars. Staff Sergeant Warren was squad leader of the leading squad of the assault platoon and when two of his scouts were wounded by enemy machine gun fire, he deliberately crawled to a position only five yards from the enemy emplacement. With his Thompson submachinegun blazing, he sprang to his feet and rushed the position, killing the enemy gunner and another occupant of the position. Despite bullet wounds in the leg received as he jumped into the emplacement, Staff Sergeant Warren turned the enemy machinegun around and sprayed enemy riflemen in foxholes surrounding the position, killing four more enemy soldiers and forcing at least four others to flee. Ignoring his own serious wounds, Staff Sergeant Warren kept firing until his squad was able to advance and mop up the remainder, at which time he was evacuated for medical aid. Staff Sergeant Warren’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 33d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
