The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Elmer S. Ward (ASN: 0-1883477), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action on 21 October 1944, in France. Lieutenant Ward, leader of the 1st Platoon of Company F, was assigned the mission of attacking a strong enemy machine gun position on a wooded hill. He led three attacks against the strong point, advancing ahead of his men in the face of heavy machine gun, machine pistol and rifle fire. On the third attack he weakened the hostile defenses and discovered the weak spot in the enemy line. Swiftly reorganizing his platoon, now depleted by numerous casualties, he led a fourth assault and, inspiring his men by his example of intrepidity, drove forward to seize his objective.
