Assigned as one of the assault companies as First Aidman, Technician Fifth Grade Vorpahl, seeing a rifleman of a neighboring unit fall wounded, left the covered position occupied by his own unit, and proceeded across open ground to the aid of the wounded man. He was under enemy rifle and machine gun fire while administering first aid, and was wounded twice himself while endeavoring to save the life of the rifleman. Technician Fifth Grade Vorpahl’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
